Meadow Mill was constructed around 1880 for cotton and wool spinning by prominent local manufacturers T & J Leigh Ltd, reflecting Stockport’s pivotal role in the Industrial Revolution. At its peak, the mill housed an impressive 120,000 spindles, positioning it as a major industrial employer in the region.
The building is a true example of Victorian industrial architecture, with seven storeys, distinctive red and blue brickwork, ornate turrets, stone details, and internally features fireproof construction — cast-iron beams with brick arches. These period features have been preserved and restored in the redevelopment.
After a series of ownership changes, comprehensive plans for residential conversion were approved in 2017. Majdiah Residence subsequently acquired the building, overseeing a £15 million restoration into new homes and commercial spaces, with completion marked in 2023.
